IN TIMES LIKE THESE
IN
TIMES LIKE THESE
The piano
couldn’t have been louder. The strident
chords tumbled down the keyboard like an earthquake as the choir rehearsed the
tumultuous intro to Sunday’s hymn:
“And ye
shall hear of wars and rumours of wars
And nation
shall rise against nation
And kingdom
against kingdom; (crash, boom, hands pounding the piano)
And there
shall be famine, pestilences and earthquakes” – (sli –i-i-ide, boom, final
resounding crash).
And then the
gentle, refreshing song, now full of meaning, accompanied more softly:
In times like these, you need a
Savior,
In times like these, you need an
anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the solid
Rock.
This Rock is Jesus – yes, He’s the
One.
This Rock is Jesus – the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the solid
Rock.
The year
that this happened was 1968. I was a new
Christian –no, not merely a churchgoer as I had been for years, but someone who
had just joyfully entered into a very real relationship with the Lord, now
knowing for certain that I would go to
Heaven when I died and could enjoy a life with Him right here and now. The words from Matthew 24 of the Holy Bible,
written so long ago and scarily pounded out in that intro, seem to be coming
true in our world right now, don’t they?
Rather than cowering in fear, we can belong to Jesus and have peace. He is as close as the whisper of His name. He invites all to come to Him and rest.Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the
truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)
